Youth celebrates World Environment DayJun 5, 2013
About 250 young people from Trikomo/Iskele, a small town in the northern part of Cyprus, marked June 5 - World Environment Day by participating in a beach cleaning event organized with the financial support of the European Union and UNDP-PFF.
The aim of the beach clean up was to sensitize the youngsters towards the importance of cleaning the beach and protecting the environment. The event provided also the opportunity to inaugurate the town's first beach cleaning machine and tractor donated by the European Union through the UNDP Partnership for the Future Programme earlier this year.
The machine and tractor were fully funded by the European Union under the Aid Programme for the Turkish Cypriot community (approx. 123.000,00 Euro). The procurement of this machine is part of a larger EU-UNDP joint effort to promote more environmentally friendly practices.
On the evening of the same day, in the Bandabuliya of Famagusta the Youth NGO MAGEM announced the winners of the children's painting and photo competition on the Environment marking this year's World Environment Day.
In two previously organized workshops held at the Bandabuliya, children aged 7-14 were invited to focus on the environmental resources and pollution in the Karpasia/Karpaz region.
