Nicosia, 1 May 2014 - Thanks to European Union funds, the United Nations Development Programme Partnership for the Future (UNDP-PFF) signed yesterday the contract for one of the biggest project of the Technical Committee on Cultural Heritage in Cyprus: the structural consolidation works to the Othello Tower/Citadel in Famagusta.

This is one of many cultural heritage sites that are benefiting island wide from emergency measures/restoration works within the framework of the EU funded “Support to cultural heritage monuments of great importance for Cyprus” programme.

The works, which shall be completed within 8 months, will focus mainly on emergency masonry stabilisation works to walls, arches and other unstable sections. Areas where losses/collapses occurred over the years will be streghened.

A proper drainage system will be constructed to canalise and take away water, which is currently one of the most damaging causes of deterioration for the Tower/Citadel. New roof layers will be installed with compatible materials to avoid rainwater infiltration in the future.

Visitors’ information features will also be provided as well as accessibility at ground level and sanitary facility to persons with disabilities.
