The European Commission and the United Nations Development Programme - Partnership for the Future (UNDP-PFF) are very pleased to invite you to the inauguration of the new cultural and community centre of Galinoporni/Kaleburnu. The inauguration ceremony will take place this Saturday 27 April at 11am, marking the rebirth of the old school of the village.

The project was funded by the European Union under the Aid Programme for the Turkish Cypriot community and implemented by the United Nations Development Programme Partnership for the Future.

The restored three-room school building dates back to the British colonial period. Before renovation, the school was falling into disrepair; the flooring, ceiling, windows and doors were deteriorating but the overall structure was still usable. Thanks to EU funds of approx. 250,000€, UNDP-PFF was able to restore and rehabilitate the old school into a community cultural center.

Today one of the old classroom hosts a local artist’s studio and exhibition space, while the other two rooms are used by local women participating in income generating projects like handicrafts workshops and trainings. The products of these trainings are for sale in a dedicated showroom.

The project for the restoration of this old school building in Galinoporni/Kaleburnu is another example of European Union funded and UNDP-PFF implemented project that succeeded to bring under the same roof cultural heritage preservation, community development, and thanks to the support of the local NGO ÇATOM, also women empowerment. It is hoped that this pilot project will serve as an example of how restoring and rehabilitating traditional spaces can contribute to building stronger communities

A short ceremony to mark the completion of the project will be held on Saturday 27 April at 11 am in front of the school building.

Media and villagers are invited to the event.
