Technical Committee on Cultural Heritage, European Commission and UNDP visit the Panagia Melandrina Church and Kyrenia Shipwreck.

04 July 2013
- The Technical Committee on Cultural Heritage together with Representatives of the European Commission and of the United Nations Development Programme (UNDP) visited yesterday the Panagia Melandrina Church, where emergency interventions are currently being implemented.

The project, funded by the European Union, through the UNDP Partnership for the Future Programme, consists of emergency measures aiming at avoiding further damages or partial collapses of the Church, which stands today in very precarious conditions. The project is due to be completed by September.

During the site visit, Greek Cypriot and Turkish Cypriot members of the Technical Committee were briefed on the on-going status of works which includes removal of debris and vegetation, permanent timber structural support, and the provision of a temporary roof to prevent rainwater infiltrations.

"The Greek Cypriot and the Turkish Cypriot media are rightly giving a large coverage to the renovations of Apostolos Andreas, but there are many other cultural heritage preservation projects – on monuments of higher historical importance – that Greek Cypriot and Turkish Cypriot members of the Technical Committee are carrying out together like Panagia Melandrina Church. These small projects are setting a positive example of successful collaboration between Greek Cypriots and Turkish Cypriots in the field of cultural heritage” – said in a joint statement Mr. Takis Hadjidemetriou and Mr. Ali Tuncay.

Furthermore, the delegation carried out a site visit to the Kyrenia Castle to assess the present condition of the Kyrenia shipwreck and related exhibition spaces where a future project is currently under consideration.

The site visit is part of the Technical Committee’s supervision work in different cultural heritage sites island-wide where emergency interventions are currently being implemented with financial support from the European Union.

The next site of the Technical Committee will be to the Paphos Hamam.
