1st Nicosia International Women’s Film WeekMar 5, 2014
Nicosia, 4 March 2014 – On the occasion of International Women’s Day, the United Nations Development Programme (UNDP) and the Goethe-Institut in Nicosia, invite you to the opening of the first Nicosia Women’s Film Week, Saturday 8 March 2014.
The launch will begin at 6:00 p.m. at the Goethe-Institut. It will be followed at 7:00 p.m. by the Opening Night Film “Salma” by internationally acclaimed, multiple-award winning filmmaker Kim Longinotto.
The Film Week will last 8 days – from 8 to 15 March - and will showcase 13 films and stories of women from around the world. The selection was made thanks to the support of foreign embassies and cultural institutions in Cyprus, and brings together interesting reflections on a variety of gender issues, including domestic violence, equal opportunities, gender roles and women’s participation in politics.
The representatives of the selecting embassies and/or cultural Institutions will briefly introduce all films. All movies will be screened in their original language with English subtitles.
In addition to the films, UNDP is also organizing two panel discussions. More information will be provided on UNDP’s website as soon as it is available: www.cy.undp.org
Entrance to all film nights and panel discussion is free.
“The main objective of this International Women’s Film Week is to provide a space for reflection and dialogue on different dimensions of gender equality, women’s rights and women’s empowerment. The week showcases films from Europe, but also non-European countries in an effort to express that women’s stories are not isolated stories, but more often global stories to which we can all relate” – Tiziana Zennaro, UNDP Programme Manager.
The United Nations family in Cyprus, including the United Nations Peacekeeping Force in Cyprus (UNFICYP), is pleased to support this exciting weeklong initiative from UNDP as part of collective efforts to foster discussion about the importance of increasing women’s participation and promoting women’s voices. UNDP wishes to express its deep appreciation to all those who helped to organize the Film Week.
