Jul 6, 2016

Thanks to EU funds, the UNDP and the Technical Committee on Cultural Heritage are ready to start conservation works at the Maronite Church of Agia Marina.

Nicosia, 06/07/2016 – The Technical Committee on Cultural Heritage, the European Commission and the United Nations Development Programme are pleased to announce the startup of conservation works to the Maronite Church of Agia Marina.

The project is implemented by UNDP on behalf of the Technical Committee on Cultural Heritage and the European Commission. Survey and project designs were carried between February and March 2016. The conservation works contract has been signed by UNDP on 29th June 2016, and the construction site has been delivered to the contractor. Works are expected last 5 months and shall be completed by end of 2016.

“The inclusion of Agia Marina Church in the conservation programme of the Technical Committee on Cultural Heritage demonstrates the respect and care for the Maronite culture, its people and its contribution to the diverse and rich heritage of Cyprus. The completion of the Church will add yet another valuable cultural landmark we will all be proud of” said Mr. Glafkos Constantinides and Mr. Ali Tuncay on behalf of the Technical Committee on Cultural Heritage.

The total cost of the project is of approx. 136,500 Euro, fully funded by the European Union under phase 4 of the project “Support to monuments of great importance for Cyprus”.

Conservation works to the church will include: general cleaning of the site, cleaning and repairing of existing roof including careful removal of the tiles and cement additions on the roof of the building, conservation and structural interventions to the walls, conservation of the belfry, cleaning and plastering of stonewalls surfaces, construction of new drainage channels and provision of new wooden doors and windows.

Agia Marina Church is the third Maronite heritage site to benefit from conservation works after the Old St. George Church (completed in November 2015) and Karpaseia/Karpasha Church where works are currently ongoing.
