Oct 17, 2016

Nicosia, 17 October 2016 – The Technical Committee on Cultural Heritage, the European Commission and the United Nations Development Programme are pleased to announce the signature of conservation works contract for Archangelos Michael Church in Lefkonoiko/Gecitkale.

Conservation works to the church will last 8 months and cost approx. 390,000 Euro, fully funded by the European Union.

With this project the Technical Committee on Cultural Heritage aims at consolidating and stabilising the church to the maximum extent possible, in order to bring the building back to its original state.

The church will undergo a major structural consolidation. Inside the church, frescoes and the carved woodworks of the gynaikonitis will be stabilised and preserved by a specialised conservator. Externally, the portico roof will be reconstructed and the old school building consolidated and protected. The yard and the perimeter wall will be upgraded and improved.

Other conservation works will include: cleaning of dressed stones surfaces, pointing, removal of repointing and new stone carving as well as removal and reconstruction of the existing roof, doors and windows.

Informative meetings will be held by the Technical Committee on Cultural Heritage and UNDP about chosen conservation methodologies and work plans.
