Nicosia, 20/06/2014 – The Technical Committee on Cultural Heritage is pleased to announce the completion of emergency measures to Panagia Melandrina Church in Kalograia/Bahceli funded by the European Union and implemented by the United Nations Development Programme - Partnership for the Future.

The monastery of Panagia Melandrina was active until 1940. The Church was most likely built during the 15th century, although archaeological remains around the monastery suggest the presence of an earlier in date settlement. Of the monastic complex, only the Church remains today, preserved thanks to the joint efforts of the Technical Committee on Cultural Heritage. Without these urgent emergency measures we were running the risk of losing the Church as well” – explain Sophocles Hadjisavvas and Ilkay Feridun speaking on behalf of the Technical Committee on Cultural Heritage.

The emergency measures works were implemented by the United Nations Development Programme Partnership for the Future (UNDP-PFF), and started in May 2013.  The project – fully funded by the European Union – cost approximately EUR 137,000 (design and works).

Emergency measures included general cleaning, removal of debris and vegetation from the building and inside the yard, consolidation of deteriorated masonry in order to prevent it from further collapse, control of organic growth, excavation, permanent timber structural support, and consolidation of the walls and provision of a temporary roof to prevent rainwater infiltrations.

Panagia Melandrina Church is one of many cultural heritage sites that are currently benefiting island wide from emergency measures/conservation works within the framework of the programme “Support to cultural heritage monuments of great importance for Cyprus” which is wholly funded by the European Union.

To-date, 15 cultural heritage sites island-wide are benefiting from survey, designs, emergency measures and conservation works. Conservation works are nearly completed for Agios Afksentios Church in Komi Kebir/Buyukkonuk and Agios Nicolaos Church in Syrianochori/Yayla and new contracts have recently been signed for the structural consolidation of the Othello Tower in Famagusta, and emergency measures to the Mosques in Evretou/Dereboyu and Phasouri/Cerkez.
